The first international symosium on intraocular lenses and implants was held at the Royal Society of Medicine, London in 1966. Out of this meeting the Intraocular Implant Club (IIC) was formed with Ridley as the first President. John Pike was made a founder member, an indication of the close association between Rayner and the pioneering surgeons.
The IIC became the main forum for the continuing development of implant surgery.
By 1975 its membership had grown considerably and reflected the growing American interest in IOLs. Ernest Ford, who had joined Rayner in 1935, became a member of the IIC following the retirement of John Pike.
