Sixty years of saving sight

Sunday 29th November 2009 will mark the 60th anniversary of the implantation of the first intraocular lens (IOL) by Sir Harold Ridley on 29th November 1949. That first lens was implanted at St Thomas’s Hospital London.

Rayner would like very much to thank all those who have this month sent written messages acknowledging and saluting the 60 years of uninterrupted IOL manufacture. As one eye-surgeon correspondent remarked, the development of the IOL was a revolution in modern medicine and can be likened to the “development of X-ray or Penicillin.”

Thank you.
