Rayner Introduces RaySert®, 1.8mm Small-Incision IOL Injector System

Single-use injector, designed for small-incision cataract surgery.

Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited (Rayner), the leading intraocular lens (IOL) pioneer has introduced *RaySert®, a small-incision IOL injector system. With a 1.8-mm diameter external tip, RaySert® enables surgeons to insert an IOL through a sub-2.5-mm incision, reducing surgically induced astigmatism.

Designed for use initially with the Rayner’s C-flex range of IOLs, RaySert® assures ease of use with controlled delivery through a convenient single-handed injection system. Surgeons can perform cataract surgery using truly small surgical incisions, using the RaySert®, to enhance patient comfort and recovery.

The basic premise of RaySert® is to enable the implantation of Rayner IOLs through the smallest possible incision size, thus guaranteeing the optimal relationship between IOL design and incision size. This is an important dynamic according to Mark Packer, MD: “The specific features of the IOL represent mountains in comparison to the molehills of the incision size. We often say, ‘The patient will never know – or care – if the lens went through a 2, 3 or 4-mm incision. The patient will care about the long-term quality of vision.’”

RaySert® was launched on April 11 at the ASCRS Symposium on Cataract, IOL, and Refractive Surgery in Boston. Leading ophthalmologists, Guy Kleinmann, MD; Ashok Vyas, MD; and Mark Packer, MD shared insightful information on their initial experiences with RaySert®. According to Mr Vyas, “IOL injections through small incisions need not compromise on lens design. RaySert® features a 1.8-mm tip, allowing delivery of the lens through an incision as small as 2.2 mm. However, since the parallel section length is 1.1 mm, surgeons can also position the tip inside the anterior chamber for lens delivery if they are comfortable with this technique.”

“As an innovator in IOL technology, the introduction of the RaySert® small-incision injector system is a natural progression, in delivering physicians with a new level of control and ease in IOL delivery. It is yet another milestone in Rayner’s commitment to optimize the accuracy and safety of IOL surgery outcomes,” says Donald J. Munro, Chairman and Managing Director, Rayner.

RaySert® is available for worldwide sales as a single-use injector.

*The RaySert® small-incision IOL injector system is currently available for sale in the US as R-INJ-04/18.
